The regional Programme for the YLTP is a discussion forum in preparation of a regional summer school which will take place later on in Kampala, Uganda.

The main objective of the summer school is to provide sufficient time for both trainers and tutors to share their ideas and instill the knowledge on different thematic areas to the trainees. The summer school also aimed at providing sufficient time to trainees to grasp and analyze the subject matters presented/discussed so as to enhance and broaden their capacity. It is also a platform to intensify the networking atmosphere among the trainees and their respective trainers and tutors.

Civic Education & Leadership Skills for Potential Women Candidates

In October 25th 2009, Tanzania held the Local Government Elections for electing village chairpersons, hamlets, members of the village councils as well as members of street committee. As a process of strengthening local governance at lower levels and transferring authority to people, the local government leaders have been given power to play a constructive role in consolidation of democracy within their localities to stimulate development.

In order to play a productive role to stimulate development, the local leaders have to facilitate the participation of the people in deciding on matters affecting their lives, planning and executing their development programs. However the majorities of local leaders are impeded with weak link to the people, poor coordination as well as lacks enough knowledge of power configuration and responsibilities within their localities.

As part of its efforts to enhance the advancement of workers’ rights in Eastern Africa, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Addis Ababa office is going to organize a three day experience-sharing program for regional trade unionists on working conditions in the floriculture production. This comes as a follow-up to the first best practices experience sharing workshop, held in Uganda in March 2008, in order to asses the developments and challenges since then in view of the global financial crisis and the current market and dwindling revenue for flowers.

Follow-Up on the EAC Common Market Protocol impact on the Local Authorities

The Forum - with selected members from Young Leaders Training Programmes (YLTP) and political leadership from youth wings of Social Democratic and Socialist Parties in Eastern Africa - shall identify and discuss critically areas of interest and perspectives within the policies of leadership and social justice. Focus should be in working out some policy proposals for committed (new) leadership and exchanging experiences and ideas within the group of FES-YLTPs in the region. These ideas and suggestions shall contribute to more social justice within a realistic political and socio-economic framework of African states and regional organizations. The Forum finally aims on the improvement of perspectives for the youth. Speakers and presenters will be drawn particularly from YLTPs in participating countries.

This issue focuses mainly on the global economic crisis and its challenges for Africa.

50 women from the Urambo district in Tabora attended a FES training for the support of women’s participation in communal politics. The workshop was to motivate women to stand for the local elections this year in order to contribute to gender balanced policies and to create a network between politically committed women. Active participation of the women and the contribution of the Tanzanian ministry for community development, gender and children made this activity a great success.
