Regional Activities of FES Tanzania

Processes of regional integration such as in the East African Community were often initiated out of economic interests. Stakeholders of economic interests are confronted with unequal opportunities of interest representation. Those backed by economic and financial power are usually in a much Map: Tanzania, East African Community, East Africa (UN Definition) stronger position compared to the interest representation of small farmers, workers at grassroot levels and the rural and urban poor. The empowerment of those still disadvantaged for a more equal and fair interest representation at regional and international levels will help to develop a peoples centered regional integration process. Improved transparency through the monitoring of civil society and an understanding among stakeholders about the social, political and economic impact of regional integration will contribute to the further development of good governance within the institutions and processes of regional integration in Eastern Africa.

Within the regional activities of FES in Eastern Africa the Tanzania Office plays a central role in the support of democratic processes in the region. FES intends to support the development of good governance through civil society actors in the EAC integration process. Furthermore, young leaders from civil society, political party activists and trade unionist will be provided with opportunities for exchange of experience and for the development of common ideas and action plans for the improvement of good governance.

FES Tanzania is also the coordinating office for all FES trade union activities in the East African region. This includes the co-operation with the East African Trade Union Confederation which focuses on the developments within East African Community as well as the exchange with the organisations of the international trade movement and their African regional branches.
